Cascade – Stag Rocks

It was the Bicton Boys second day on snow, the first on crampons and they wanted some proper climbing. A bit of a pump. Both are strong rock climbers but wanted ice rather than mixed. So we headed over towards Hells Lum this morning, passing a couple of teams who were on their way back up, unhappy with the snow conditions. We managed to thread our way down the vegetation rather than the snow, but looking over at Hells Lum, it was quite buried so we headed left and around to Stag Rocks where we found the crag in...

Rab Vapour Rise Guides Jacket – Review

I’ve been using this for: One and a Half Years Where?: Scottish winters, Alpine routes, Nepal, China. Official website: http://rab.uk.com/products/mens-clothing/vapour-rise_1/vapour-rise-guide-jacket.html The 2017 version is on Amazon here. This jacket in the “Vapour Rise” range, is the warmest of the collection, with a fixed helmet compatible hood. This soft-shell jacket is designed for colder weather, ideal for Scottish Winter climbing, Alpine routes etc Good Stuff: There’s some great aspects to this particular hard-fleece/softshell style jacket; It’s warm, and the fleece fibre are very comfortable against the skin, it’s definitely high quality fleece. The hood is great, and goes right over...

Blustery day on the CIC Hut Cascades

For Tony’s final day in Scotland we were keen to get on some steeper climbing, but were also wanting to avoid the wind higher up the mountain. It was a bit of a short sharp introduction for Tony, who experienced forearm and calf pump in equal quantities! Loads of ice on the mountain at the moment, and it’s growing all...

DMM Fly Ice Axes – Review

I’ve been using this for: 1 Month Where?: Scottish winters, Official website: http://dmmclimbing.com/products/new-fly/ And here on Amazon. I’ve only been using these Ice Axes for a month, but thought I’d write a quick “First Impressions” review. DMM have updated their whole Ice Axe range for this winter season, and the DMM flys have had a few little tweaks to the original design. The Flys used to be a bit of an “Old School” axe, with their straight shaft design and leashes, but the update has added enough that I thought I’d get a pair for easier routes and to...

Another day of laps in the trees. Low angled slopes avoiding the avi hazard and trying to keep out of the wind. Pretty wild weather at the moment.
