Plan C with Chris

Photos and report from Matt who’s been out with regular visitor Chris. Back in Devon for a couple of days with Vertical Frontier’s regular Chris. With the ever changing wind direction and rain coming at us from all angles, it was a last minute decision to head East to try and escape the rain for as long as possible, and hopefully drop out of the strong wind. Chris was keen for a bit of sea cliff climbing so we headed for Red Wall at Berry Head. Monday: Plan C Red Wall, Berry Head Out of the wind and rain,...

Summers Haze in Portland

Just had the following report from Matt, who’s been up at Portland working with Alex on a learn to lead course. Summers Haze in Portland We have had some mixed weather over the last few weeks in the southwest, but the May bank holiday did not disappoint, blue skies and sunshine all around, so perfect conditions for Alex to head out for his first ever outdoor rock trip. Arcteryx Gamma Guide Softshell trousers – Review

I’ve been using this for: Six Months Where?: Scottish winters, Alpine routes, Ski touring and Spring Rock Climbing Official website: http://arcteryx.com/product.aspx?language=EN&gender=mens&category=Pants-Shorts&model=Gamma-Guide-Pant These soft shell trousers are one of many in Arcteryx’s line of soft shells. They are unlined and suitable for warmer weather, i.e. Alpine summers etc. Good Stuff: Like most Arcteryx kit, these are well thought out trousers, and look good too. I love the thigh pockets, one zipped, the other with a velcro flap. You can stash gear in them but unlike some trousers these pockets aren’t too bulky when their empty. The trousers are fairly close...

A move to Chamonix, and busy in Devon

It’s been a busy couple of months since coming back form the Scottish winter season, apologies for not updating the blog for a while but hopefully this one will bring it up to date. Spring has been busy down in the South-West and we have been running climbing courses on Dartmoor, Alpine training weekends for aspiring Alpinists and a crevasse rescue workshop for members of the South Devon mountaineering club (see previous post). The navigation courses have been ticking along as well, mostly bronze NNAS courses with several folk on the CCF trip to North Wales very close to the Silver award. On a personal note, it’s been tricky to fit in much Rock Climbing due to a combination of weather and work, but I’ve managed to get out on Dartmoor bouldering a few times and had a nice sunny trip to Torbryan a week ago with Matt and John which was great. The running has been going well, and it’s easy to fit in a run whilst working away, especially up in the Brecon Beacons where I was based for three weeks doing some freelance leadership training for Outposts Ltd. I managed to squeeze in a few races as well, a 17miler on the North Devon coastal path, a Dartmoor runners orienteering event and a local 5km park run. But onto the main news story – Chamonix. Emma...

Alpine Ropework weekend for SDMC

Last weekend I had a great couple of days with members from the South Devon Mountaineering Club at Hound Tor on Dartmoor. We ran through various techniques for the Alps, focusing on crevasse rescue and glacier travel. More photos on our facebook page: A weekend at Hound Tor with members of the SDMC taking them through Crevasse rescue techniques and Alpine ropework.
