BMG Avalanche Course in Aussois

Back home in Chamonix after a week away on guides courses. After the Off Piste Course we drove through the tunnel to Aussois in the Vanoise Nationa Park. Here we met up once again with Alain Duclos who’s a definite expert in the avalanche field and who has run courses for many of the guide associations in Europe. An ex Ski Patroller and Mountain Guide, Alain has completed a PHD in Slab avalanches and now works as an adviser for the Savoie region both as an expert witness in court and for current avalanche conditions for road safety. BMC Winter Meet – Part One

Bit windy out! Monday 27th Jan 2014 Today was the first day of climbing on the BMC International winter meet, and I had the pleasure of being partnered with Ladislav from the Czech Republic. He had been to Scotland before but only in summer. A regular climber and also a climbing instructor back home; Ladislav has been a great partner. Our first day out on the hill has been a windy one to say the least, the road up from Glenmore was closed due to snow on the road but they allowed us to drive a little way up...

Ski Guiding course – La Grave

La Grave really is a fantastic place. One lift to access some wild terrain, no pistes or ski patrol, just one big mountain! Perfect for a three day course in off-piste ski guiding, in steep terrain. We skied lots of different runs, discussing and practicing various guiding techniques. It snowed on our last night of the course, so on our “day off” between courses we met up with a couple of Gavin’s friends for some more skiing, including a great couloir run right down to the valley floor. I’m totally inspired by this type of guiding, and seriously looking...

Fly By

Making the best of it Saturday 18th 2014 This weekend I flew up to Scotland (very jet set) mainly for an Avalanche CPD course, but it was also a good opportunity to sneak a couple of climbs in. Unfortunately yet again the weather was trying to stop play but Jake and I were having none of it. We headed in early to try and beat the worst of the weather, but by now the winds were starting to pick up and the snow was falling, not wanting to take the hint we made our way to the base of...

Which way’s North? – Magnetic Variation shifts East

Which ways North? “Grid to Mag, Add – Mag to Grid get rid” I’m going to have to readjust my Navigation courses a little. Have a read of the article from Grough, for the first time in 200 years the Magnetic variation is nil or even slightly east, depending on where you are. Mainly affecting the far west of Cornwall at the moment. grough — Eastern turn for compasses for first time in 200 years as North shifts. Another useful website allows you to calculate the magnetic variation for your location:...
