Warm weather and soft snow on Mont Blanc

Following on from my previous post – I can report that Francois and I had a very successful Mont Blanc ascent – climbing and skiing the  mountain in thirteen hours from the Grand Mulet hut. The route was in superb condition, with no icy patches on the arete royale, just good neve snow to crampon up. It was very warm though, the freezing level was around 4000m but we had a little breeze. Spring skiing from the Aiguille du Midi

It seems my ski season isn’t quite finished just yet: Just had a couple of days skiing up at the Aiguille du Midi with Francois, preparing for our Mont Blanc attempt this week, guiding for High Mountain Guides. There’s some great snow around, lots of good spring skiing and mostly untracked. End of the Ski season?

Temperatures have rocketed here in the Alps over the past week or so, and we’ve had some serious rain as well. It’s that point in the season where the remaining snow gets quite active, and falls off the mountain! The snow is so unstable that the Chamonix valley issued a warning to stay off the hill sides, even at low level as the avalanches from the high peaks could almost reach the valley. Luckily I’m not due to be working until the weekend, so no pressure to get up into the hills – time for indoor bouldering and flat...
