A long day out – traverse of Mont Buet

Last week we had good friends Nick and Pa to stay here in Chamonix. I had just two days off work whilst they were here, Nick was keen for an “adventure” and was keen to tick off Mont Buet as that was one of the classic tours in the area he hadn’t managed to do whilst here for a season a few years ago. I was keen for a bit of training as well, and with such stable weather and snow conditions I was interested in something more than the normal route – a grand traverse of the “ladies mont...

Grand Paradiso Ski Tour – in a day

One fifteen minute coffee stop and three five minute snack breaks were the total number of rest stops during the two thousand meter ascent of the Grand Paradiso this Monday. A steady pace, but lots of efficiency is the key to big days in the mountains. Doing the Paradiso in one day from the valley is a very big day, but Hamish and Sparky aren’t strangers to long days out, on the bikes or in the mountains. It was my first days guiding and skiing with them both, but they were very keen on the challenge and idea of...

One of the best ski weeks ever :)

A day off today, and a day off from skiing completely. Which is hard when the sun is shining and the snow is deep, but I’m warding off the man flu before more fun in the snow later this week. It’s been an amazing few days here in the Chamonix valley. The snow has been falling hard and the off piste has been getting topped up every day with light fluffy powder. Classic from-the-car ski touring

There is something very satisfying about putting the skins on the skis at the roadside, and touring up into the mountains away from the resort. It’s traditional, pure, or whatever you want to call it. You have to “earn your turns”, find the way and plan the route for the day. Tim and Elkie are well into this type of touring, and don’t mind a good bit of vertical gained. In fact, I think they enjoy the up as much as the down! We headed to the Col next to the Bel Oiseau in Switzerland, a stiff 1200m ascent...

It's that time of year.... the summer isn't far away and it's worth thinking about summer alpine plans early. Booking guides and huts are worth doing in advance! And that isn't a marketing ploy by the way :)
This year we have a few trips scheduled, including Mont Blanc (3 trips), Matterhorn and some lesser known peaks like the Domes du Miage.
Have a browse of the scheduled trips page - and give us a bell if you'd like to arrange a trip on different dates, we have a list of people who'd like to share some guided climbing adventures.

Another day of laps in the trees. Low angled slopes avoiding the avi hazard and trying to keep out of the wind. Pretty wild weather at the moment.
