Bucket loads of snow and spring like conditions…. in January

After the deluge of rain and snow on the 21st January, high pressure has setup over the alps and here in Chamonix we’ve had spring like temperatures and stable snow conditions for the past week or so. Below 2000m the snow is very firm in the morning until the sun softens it up, but higher up the mountain pockets of powder can be found. We’ve had a good few days out ski touring in the Aosta Valley just over in Italy as well as closer to home on the Vallee Blanche. Many people are profiting from the stable weather and conditions and so many of the classic ski tours are getting done in the Aiguille Rouge as well as higher tours in the Argentiere basin like the Col du Passon. The Vallee Blanche is in great condition, so much snow this year! Places like the Salle du Manger are well filled in, and there are people touring and skiing just about everywhere. We’re due some more snow later this week, so a return to powder skiing by the weekend hopefully. Here’s a video of our ski tour in Italy, as well as some photos from the Vallee...

Skiing in the rain is never much fun, although it’s surprising what you can achieve with a bit of Gore-tex and coffee stops! Les Houches was a good fall back option in these conditions, pretty low avalanche danger there if you stay away from the steep off piste runs. Thankfully we had so much early season snow the rain didn’t actually affect it too much, and if anything, this heating and subsequent cooling will help to stabilise the snow in the long term making for a better winter season overall. It’s good to look on the positive side off things! Now we’re back into a normal weather cycle, temperatures are back to seasonal average and we’ve had some fresh snow up high. The latest weather has come in from the south, meaning Italy has had more snow, and in some cases too much, resulting in various valleys being closed off completely for fear of natural avalanches. Here in the Chamonix valley, we had a pretty large natural avalanche that swept into the barriers at the bottom of the valley, which thankfully did their job nicely. No...
