The Ski Mountaineering Season Begins

The ski season is drawing to a close, but the Ski Mountaineering season has only just started out here in Chamonix. It’s time for high summits and early starts. Yesterday (Saturday 21st) we were up on Mont Blanc, enjoying the incredibly warm and still weather before skiing down into the heat of the valley in the afternoon. The heat in the valley (22 degrees on Saturday) is causing the lower snow to be pretty terrible to ski by mid morning, or even avalanche, but above 2000m the conditions are better and the glaciers are so well filled this year...

10 Ski Touring tips for your next trip

Here’s a few ideas and tips before you set off on your next ski tour, with a guided group or on your own. This is a bit of a random list, put together as we skinned up to our hut today. But there’s a lot you can achieve in a short time frame that can supplement your longer training sessions at the weekend. You’ll still need to get that multi hour training...

Domes du Miage Ski Tour – April 2018

Deciding on a ski touring venue is always tricky, and with the forecast this week it was proving particularly difficult. The forecast seemed to change every day, and it was suggesting both fresh snow and high winds. Luckily we weren’t committed to a specific tour or route, and so we could pick and choose at the last minute. We ended up picking the Conscrits Refuge as a base for our two nights, as it fitted our ski mountaineering plans and there would be a variety of tours we could have a go at from the hut. So after some...
