Matterhorn Summit Extension

Description:

The Matterhorn is one of the worlds most recognisable mountains, standing tall and alone above the town of Zermatt in Switzerland. It’s an intimidating peak, with steep faces and ridge lines with no easy route to the summit.

This two or three day trip is an extension, rather than a stand alone trip. You will have completed a three day climbing and acclimatisation block with us to ensure your preparation. Please read our detailed Matterhorn page for full information on the climb.

Required experience:

We highly recommend you have done at least a weeks alpine mountaineering before booking a Matterhorn climb. This will give you both the skills and experience to increase your chance of success on the Matterhorn, as well as your enjoyment! The ascent of the Matterhorn should be part of your alpine career, rather than the beginning of it.

Example itinerary

You can book a two or three day Matterhorn extension with us. Three days gives you more options in terms of weather and conditions, although you would still get one "proper" attempt on the mountain itself.

  1. We travel to Zermatt from Chamonix and use the lift system before walking into the Hornli hut, which is around a two hour walk. Sometimes we have a quick Reece of the lower mountain, but mainly this is about getting into position for the big day ahead.

  2. Ascent of the Matterhorn! 8 – 10 hours round trip, stopping for a bite to eat in the hut before descending to Zermatt and travel to Chamonix.

  3. Spare summit day. We can climb around Chamonix, developing our skills whilst doing some good climbing either pre, or post Matterhorn climb.

We have set our prices to be as flexible as possible, and so if the conditions or weather on the Matterhorn are not suitable we would climb elsewhere and therefore could save you some money compared with travelling to Zermatt. We pay the hut deposit (which is non-refundable), you would cover lift passes and remaining hut fees for both you and your guide during the trip.

Price includes:

Guiding fees, logistics, travel to Zermatt from Chamonix and one nights deposit in the Hornli hut for you and your guide.

Price excludes:

Lift passes (including guides pass which you will need to cover), Chamonix accommodation, remaining Hornli hut fee (200chf), equipment rental, insurance, flights and any other expenses not listed above.

Last lift accessed ski tour of (my) season from Contamines yesterday.

Plenty of folk out enjoying the good conditions on the classics.

A weeks holiday away from the mountains now. Rest time before the @trofeomezzalama race at the end of the month.

Vertical Frontiers Ltd

A big couple of days on the wild Miage glacier taking advantage of the great spring ski touring conditions.

Up Mont Tondu and then today over the Miage after a night in the Conscrits refuge. Which served a vegetarian meal to the whole hut last night, meaning it’s now my favourite refuge. 🌱

Over 3500m of ascent and some very good snow on the way down.

Well the express Haute Route didn’t exactly go to Plan. A meter of fresh snow at altitude put paid to that.

We headed south and spent a great couple of days around the Mont Thabor area. Nice hut, quiet and loads of good skiing. Despite the cloud.
