Guided introduction to ski touring course with hut night
Description:
Join us for a three day ski touring course, with an overnight trip in a mountain refuge.
The areas in and around Chamonix offer some fantastic terrain for ski touring, for beginner to advanced ski tourers. This three course, led by an experienced IFMGA mountain guide starts with a day trip from Chamonix followed by an overnight two day trip.
We decide on the exact itineraries each day, according to the groups abilities, weather and snow conditions. It’s important to remain flexible, so as to enjoy the best, and safest, snow.
-
Meet in Chamonix in the morning, for group briefing and gear check. Our day tour will usually involve taking a ski lift to start, and after a warm up run or two we put the skins on the skis and start our tour. Normally involving around 800m height gain, with plenty of time for technique practice and coaching. We return via the lift system to spend the night in Chamonix.
-
Today we transfer in the morning from Chamonix to the start of the overnight trip. We again aim to have a little warm up run, then complete a ski tour to arrive at our refuge in the afternoon. All of these tours give us flexibility to do some good downhill skiing on this day, rather than just a big long uphill to the hut.
-
A prompt start gives us plenty of time to enjoy a more challenging ski tour, often around 1000m height gain. The choose huts with multiple options for itineraries, according to conditions and skiing level of the group. We descend back into the valley by mid afternoon, giving you time to meet your airport transfer if you’re flying out that same evening.
Example hut itineraries:
Refuge des Pres above les Contamines, non-glacial with a variety of ski tours to choose from whatever the weather.
Refuge de Argentiere, accessed from the Grand Montet ski area (Chamonix) with many classic cols to ski on day 2.
Grand St Bernard hospice in Switzerland, a historically important pass which offers great touring with unique lodging.
Benevelo refuge, Italy. An hour and a half’s drive from Chamonix, this excellent area offers a variety of tours of varying difficulty.
