Itinerary

Sunday

Meet in Ischgl,on Sunday morning. Ischgl Is a large ski area and we will make use of the extensive lift system too do some pre tour ski technique coaching to prepare everyone for the Tour. Then we will take the impressive new cable car to the summit of Piz das Val Gronda 2812m. From here we begin our tour proper, skiing off the South side of the summit and into the wilderness of the Silvretta. Steady slopes lead to the large and comfortable Heidelberger Hut at 2305m.

Monday

Training day from the hut, looking at improving your downhill techniques using the lift, followed by a short tour and returning to the hut for a second night.

Tuesday

We will leave the Heidelberger hut after breakfast and begin climbing straight away. This gentle ascent is a pleasant way too remind everyone how to move uphill effectively and efficiently, at each turn in the ascent a new vista comes into view. Our goal is the Kronejoch at 2958m. From here we also have the option of taking our first 3000m peak. From the joch we will ski directly to the luxurious Jamtal hut for a bowl of soup and a hot shower. There are several different routes from the Heidelberger to the Jamtal and we will choose the one with the best snow. The descent from the Joch to the hut is almost 800m.

Wednesday

Leaving the Jamtal hut involves a short ski down. Once in the valley bottom we have a very enjoyable skin up to the Jamtal glacier, once on the glacier we have stunning views on all sides. This wide glacier gently winds its way down from some very impressive peaks which guard the entrance to our objective, the Ober Oschenscharte at 2977m. From here we have a choice of descents to the Wiesbadener huette. If the snow is good then we will probably do at least one skin back up without our packs to enjoy a second decent.

Thursday

Lots of options today. We will be staying for a second night in the Wiesbadener hut so we can leave our hut items behind and with slightly lighter sacks make the most of the terrain available. There are many day itineries to choose from, all with beautiful scenery and magnificent views.

Friday

We finish with a fantastic day, leaving the hut we climb up the Rauhkopf glacier before dropping in to a hidden valley and making one of the longest descents of the tour. From 3000m back all the way to Galtur, stopping for lunch on the way. Amazing scenery throughout!

How good a skier I do I need to join this trip?

You should be confident skiing off piste in a variety of snow conditions, a level 3 on our scale. No previous ski touring experience is necessary, but some uphill fitness is a good idea, a level 2 on our scale

If your not sure about your current ability or fitness level, please do contact us for some advice. We also run ski touring skills weekends if you need to brush up your skills

What equipment will I need for this trip?

We will provide each member for the group with avalanche safety gear such as a transceiver, shovel and probe. You will need mountaineering equipment such as a harness, helmet, axe and crampons, which can be hired from us. Details here.

You will need your normal ski touring equipment such as skis, boots, skins, ski crampons which can be hired in Chamonix if required. Skiing on a light setup with a streamlined rucksack is a very good idea. Skis around 85 – 95 wide are about right, anything skinner will struggle in deep snow and anything wider is hard work on icy skinning tracks. We are working on our online equipment list and will send out a pdf version when you book.

Why Ski Tour with Vertical Frontiers?

All of our guides are fully certified IFMGA Mountain guides with years of experience of off piste skiing and ski touring. We know the Haute route well and all of our trips are led with a strong emphasis on safety and conservative decision making in the mountains. We also love our skiing, and ski touring especially!

What are the mountain huts like?

A good way of thinking of the mountains huts/refuge’s are as mountain hostels. All involve mixed shared rooms or dormitories, all are plenty warm enough and all feature some pretty impressive views!

Most of the huts have to melt snow for water, so there are limited facilities for washing/showers.

We book into the huts on a half board basis, so dinner and breakfast are on a set menu basis, there is always plenty of food. It’s possible to buy lunch and snacks when we get to the huts in the afternoon, as well as cups of tea/beer/wine etc.

At the bottom of this page there are links to the huts we use so you can click through and see what they look like.
