Matterhorn Summit Climb – five day trip
Description:
The Matterhorn is one of the worlds most recognisable mountains, standing tall and alone above the town of Zermatt in Switzerland. It’s an intimidating peak, with steep faces and ridge lines with no easy route to the summit.
This five day trip provides training and acclimitisation before heading to Zermatt. Please read our detailed Matterhorn page for full information on the climb.
Required experience:
We highly recommend you have done at least a weeks alpine mountaineering before booking a Matterhorn climb. This will give you both the skills and experience to increase your chance of success on the Matterhorn, as well as your enjoyment! The ascent of the Matterhorn should be part of your alpine career, rather than the beginning of it.
Example itinerary
You can book an optional extra day or two with us. This would give you more options in terms of weather and conditions, although you would still get one “proper” attempt on the mountain itself.
-
Climbing in the Aiguille Rouge we get some good mileage done in big boots and practicing relevant techniques such as abseiling, lowering and different belay techniques. Night in Chamonix.
-
We drive through the tunnel to Italy and use the SkyWay lift. After dropping some equipment at the Torino refuge we climb the traverse of the Entreves and then spend the night at the hut. This is excellent acclimatisation before the Matterhorn.
-
Up early for an ascent of the Marbrees, or Tour Ronde. We aim to consolidate skills whilst finishing our acclimatisation. It’s also important to save some energy for the Matterhorn! Night in Chamonix.
-
We travel to Zermatt from Chamonix and use the lift system before walking into the Hornli hut, which is around a two hour walk. Sometimes we have a quick Reece of the lower mountain, but mainly this is about getting into position for the big day ahead.
-
Ascent of the Matterhorn! 8 – 10 hours round trip, stopping for a bite to eat in the hut before descending to Zermatt and travel to Chamonix. If the weather or conditions are not suitable then we have plenty of backup options, always keeping our plan flexible.
If you’ve already climbed some of the above routes, then we have alternative climbs for the acclimatisation phase, such as from the Monvino refuge or the peaks around Saas Grund in Switzerland.
