Alpine skills – training course
This two day training course will give you a solid introduction to alpine style climbing techniques such as crevasse rescue, glacial travel and basic ridge rope work.
The trip is based from Chamonix and we climb from the SkyWay lift in Italy as well as the Aiguille du Midi. This is a training course, so there are no big climbs planned but plenty of time for questions and practice.
- Day 1: Crevasse rescue and acclimatisation. We meet in Chamonix at 8.00am on the first morning of the trip. After introductions and gear checks we get in the car and drive through the Mont Blanc tunnel into Italy, and use the SkyWay lift to get into the Mountains. Once here we get geared and roped up for a walk across the glacier and a suitable safe crevasse rescue spot. Now we practice some basic crevasse rescue including snow anchors and pulley systems. We then head down the lift and back into Chamonix for the night.
- Staying in France we use the Aiguille du Midi lift to climb on the opposite side if the valley to yesterday. There are some good training routes here such as the Laurence arete next to the Cosmiques refuge. This is an opportunity to practice some alpine style rope work and also some steep crampon work on the Aiguille du Midi arete itself.
