Spaghetti tour 5 day Monta Rosa traverse
Description:
A five day trip traversing the Zermatt skyline, peak bagging 4000m summits.
The Spaghetti tour is the name used by english speaking climbers for the traverse of the Zermatt and Monta Rosa peaks. We stay in Italian mountain huts along the way, eating pasta each day, hence the name of the tour!
It’s possible to climb one or more 4000m peaks each day, all of which are unique and offer some classic mountaineering ascents. Possible 4000m summits include:
- Briethorn
- Castor
- Lyskamm Nose
- Naso
- Vincent Piramid
- Ludwigshoe
- Parrotspitze
- Signalkuppe
- Zumsteinspitze
The itinerary remains very flexible, and it’s also possible to traverse between some of the huts below the glaciers, meaning we can avoid any bad weather at altitude. This is a really good itinerary after one of our Mont Blanc trips, where you have experience of crampons and alpine climbing.

Meet in Chamonix early and then drive through to Italy and on to Cervinia. After using the lift system, we climb the normal route on the Breithorn, the first 4000m peak of the trip. After descending back to the glacier we traverse past the Briethorn and Pollux before dropping to the Guide d’Ayas rifugio for the night.
-
The traverse of Castor and it’s narrow summit ridges is totally spectacular. After the summit we drop down to the Quintino Sella refuge relatively quickly and spend the afternoon relaxing there.
-
A key passage of the trip across some major glaciers and peaks. From the rifugio, we retrace our steps a little before heading up to Lyskamm Nose, then traverse El Naso and up to Vincent Pyramid before down to Rifugio Gneffeti for the night.
-
A satisfying day of peak bagging and a night in the highest mountain refuge in the alps! After leaving the Gneffeti rifugio we climb SignalKuppe where the Margaretta hut lies.
-
On our final day we climb the nearby Zumsteinspitze, our final 4000m peak of the trip. After that we tackle the long descent past the Gneffeti hut and to the lift system. After reaching the Gressoney valley we use a taxi to return to Cervinia and the cars.
