Based out of Newtonmore (near Aviemore) close to the Cairngorms National Park and Creag Meagaidh, these courses are suitable for people wanting a solid introduction to winter Mountaineering.

Covering some steeper ground, typically grade I gullies, we will use a rope to safe guard our ascents. This is the gap between winter walking and climbing and typically one axe is sufficient. These core skills are vital for anyone wanting to climb the classic gullies in Scotland and for those wishing to progress onto steeper climbs.

Scotland0001

Over the two days we will cover topics such as;

  • Snow anchors and belays
  • Winter belay techniques
  • Movement on steep snow
  • Descending steep snow using the rope

On the second day we will aim to complete some classic snow gullies in the Cairngorms, conditions dependant. Our program is totally flexible, so we tailor the two days to meet everyone’s experience and aspirations.

Ratio: minimum 2, Maximum 1:4.

Previous Experience and Fitness:

You will need to be proficient walking in Crampons and using an Ice Axe, typically having completed a intro to winter walking course (we run these too!)

Accommodation is not included, but there are plenty of good bunkhouses/hostels/B&B’s etc in both Newtonmore and Aviemore.

Equipment: A comprehensive kit list will be sent out when you book onto a course. We have a few sets of crampons and ice axes that we can lend on a first come first served basis.
